What is the difference between the different types of cards ?

Digital memory cards are non-volatile flash memory, the basic principle behind all the cards is storage of data without the need for their own power source. Predominant use is currently in Digital Camera's, PDA'S and mobile phones, however there is now an increasing expansion of other devices now using these memory types, these include Game consoles, Satellite navigation equipment and other equipment which require a portable reliable storage medium.

Currently there are the following cards on the market, most of which we supply:- Compact Flash(CF), SmartMedia (SM),  MultiMedia Cards (MMC), Secure Digital (SD), MiniSD, Reduced Size MultiMedia Card (RSMMC), Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick PRO DUO, MicroSD and TransFlash.

To ensure you get the correct memory for your device, please follow our online guides for camera's, PDA's, Phones and other equipment.

Why are there different speeds ?

The speed of card denotes how fast it can read and write data, the hi-speed cards write data faster, therefore if you need the ability to take another photo quickly (for example sequence shots) speed will become important. For normal every day use standard speed memory will suffice.

8X = Capable of 1.2MB per sec. Min Sustained Write Speed
40X = Capable of 6.0MB per sec. Min Sustained Write Speed
66X = Capable of 9.9MB per sec. Min Sustained Write Speed
100X = Capable of 15.0MB per sec. Min Sustained Write Speed
133X = Capable of 20.0MB per sec. Min Sustained Write Speed

How many photo's can I store on a card ?

This depends on the resolution that your camera takes a photo at, some camera's also have compression utilities built into them that affect built into them that allow more than the standard amount photo's.

We quite often hear from customers that we sold a camera which is capable of storing 40 plus pictures, when in actual fact if the camera is set to the high resolution mode it can only store 3 or 4 pictures.

This is an important consideration if you are printing your photo's - the better the resolution the better the print quality will be and where a photo needs to be printed larger than the standard size, this becomes essential.

The following chart shows the number of photo's which can be stored based on the mega-pixel resolution of the camera set to the highest level with standard compression.

  32MB 64MB 128MB 256MB 512MB 1GB 2GB 4GB
1 Megapixel 91 182 365 731 1460 2920 5840 11680
2 Megapixel 35 71 142 284 568 1136 2272 4542
3 Megapixel 26 53 106 213 426 852 1704 3408
4 Megapixel 16 32 64 128 256 512 1024 2048
5 Megapixel - 25 51 102 204 408 816 1632
6 Megapixel - 20 40 80 160 320 640 1280

For camera's over 6 million mega-pixel we recommend a minimum of 512Mb cards.

What card would recommend ?

We always advise our clients to consider how many pictures you want to store before the need to download, check the chart for the maximum amount of photo's, using this as a guide also consider that you may not be able to download - for example if you were on holiday ? Once decided check out compatibility guide to ensure that the correct card type is selected.

If you get stuck, don't hesitate to contact us on Sales@memoryforless.co.uk with your requirements, we are always happy to help, suggest and assist.

I have lost the USB cable for my camera and can not see it in your list ?

This can be for one of two reasons, firstly the cable may not be available to purchase after market, meaning that a cable is only supplied with the camera from source, there is not a replacement cable available.

or, more common, we have not yet mapped your port to a specific cable. We stock over 40,000 cables and we stock almost every camera cable available. To help us match your port if it is possible to email a details close up shot of the port this will assist in mapping that port for you or please email and we will assist you with port shots to compare.
